Thank you for volunteering your time to serve as a coach with the Somerset West Soccer Club (SWSC). Whether you are a new coach or a returning coach, the club, neighboring clubs, and the state association offer many training opportunities for you to increase your knowledge of the game and your ability to teach it effectively. What follows is a list of the club's coaching clinics and a summary of the state and national certification and licensing courses offered in the Portland metropolitan area.

National Youth License Modules

The three age-specific modules (U6 ? U8; U8 ? U10; and U10 ? U12) National Youth License Modules are the entry-level certification courses for the U.S. Youth Soccer Association (USYSA).  The club highly recommends that all coaches and assistant coaches take the appropriate modules as a minimum requirement to coach youth players.  These modules provide the basic foundation for coaching youth soccer by providing an understanding of the players' physical, mental, and social development at each age, team management training, and age-appropriate skills instruction.

State F License Coaching Course

The State F License course is the next step in coaching development.  The F License curriculum includes developing a coaching philosophy, the role of the coach, team management, and the ability to demonstrate and teach specific skills and tactics.

Prerequisites: None (The National Youth License Modules are recommended)
Time Required: 9 hours
Format: 3 hours theory (classroom) and 6 hours practical (field)

State E License Coaching Course

The State E License course is the next step in coaching development.  The E License curriculum includes positional play and player development from being technically oriented to refining those techniques and applying them to tactical situations.

Prerequisites: State F License
Time Required: 18 hours
Format: 5 hours theory, 11 hours practical, and 2 hours testing

National D License Coaching Course

The National D License course is the next step in coaching development.  The D License curriculum includes classroom instruction on team management, tactics, and game analysis and field instruction on techniques and offensive and defensive tactics.  Students are also expected to study the Laws of the Game and injury prevention as part of the course.

Prerequisites: State E License
Time Required: 40 hours
Format: 6 hours theory, 26 hours practical, and 8 hours of classroom and field testing

A more detailed description of the state and national courses and a schedule of all coaching clinics/courses in the state can be found on the Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA) Web site at www.oregonyouthsoccer.org. Please note that it is the policy of the SWSC to reimburse its coaches for the registration cost incurred to attend the National Youth License Module and state and national license courses. To obtain reimbursement for the registration fee, simply provide a copy of the course completion certificate or license along with evidence of the fee paid to the club's Head Coach.
